Tzarevo,
known in the past as Vassiliko and Michurin,
is a town and a port in the south east of
Bulgaria. It belongs to the region of Burgas
and it is close to the town of Ahtopol.
Location is 70 km south east from Burgas.
The town is the administrative center of the
municipality of Tzarevo. Until 1934 the
settlement had the Greek name Vassiliko, in
Bulgarian – Bosilkovo. In 1934 the name was
translated to be Tzarevo. Between 1950 and
1991 the name of the town was changed to
Michurin in honour of the Russian biologist
Ivan Michurin. In 1991 the name Tzarevo was
restored. There are shipbuilding, wood
processing, transportation and tailoring
enterprises in the town. The beaches are a
specific territorial resource, belonging to
Tzarevo and used in realization of tourist
purposes. The town is located at three
inlets. Tzarevo is also the first port close to the southern border of Bulgaria. Its biggest advantage is closeness to the Bosphorus outlet and the water in the aqua territory is the cleanest of the whole seaside. In 1995 the port was declared international. One of the seven humid areas in the country – the complex “Ropotamo – Veleka” is located on the territory of the municipality of Tzarevo. The oldest nature reserve in our country –“Silkosia”- is also here. “Via Pontica” – migratory route of birds from Northern Europe to the south also goes through Strandja mountain and the near seaside. The unique nature of Strandja is preserved via a set of protected territories, including the biggest natural park in our country – “Strandja”, eight reserves and a number of natural sights. The biggest river of Strandja – Veleka, also passes through the territory of the municipality of Tzarevo – 147 km long. The last 10 km of the river are navigable, and the valley of the lower course of the river is occupied with dense forests. Tzarevo is rich with monuments of culture, some of which are of regional and national importance, such as the church “St. Assumption” and remains of megalith culture of the Thracians.
